Saturday, September 4 - Arrival in Boston

Our flight on Saturday was at 11:30, so we didn't have to get up ridiculously early as we have had to in the past. We got to the airport in plenty of time and the American Airlines Super80 left right on time. The weather was mostly clear, even as we approached the East coast as hurricane Earl had cleared the way for us the night before. We flew over the northern part of New Jersey and right over New York City--we were sitting next to a guy who pointed out Long Island and Providence, RI as we descended toward Boston. After getting a great view of Cape Cod, Massachusetts Bay, and Boston Harbor, we touched down a few minutes ahead of schedule.

We learned that we could take public transportation from the airport to our hotel easily and sure enough, it was easy. We rode the Silver Line bus to the appropriate T (subway) station, where we hopped on the Red Line one stop and then the Orange Line for 3 stops and emerged from the Back Bay station, one block from our hotel. The Fairmont Copley Plaza was super nice and the staff was as well. We were surrounded in elegance. The hotel even has a mascot (or, "Canine Ambassador" as they call her), Catie Copley, the black Lab.

We checked in, dropped off our belongings, and set out for the city attractions right away. Copley Square is surrounded by the hotel, Trinity Church, the Boston Public Library, and a strip of shops and eateries along Boylston Street. The hotel concierge recommended the Parish Cafe for an early dinner since we'd basically skipped lunch due to our flight. It was a great cafe type place where we sat outdoors enjoying the cool early evening. After dinner we walked West down Boylston Street, then South on Massachusetts Avenue (referred to as "Mass Ave" by the locals), where we found Bön Bön, which makes and serves Italian Gelato. After walking back up Mass Ave and down Newbury Street, we returned to the hotel for the night.
